Counter Strike: Global Offensive Announced

Valve have unveiled a new game, and it isn’t Half Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3, Team Fortress 3 or Portal 3. No, it’s Counter Strike 3. This is going to be huge. Read More ››

Notch and Mojang are being Sued

What a load of crap this is. Notch, creator of Minecraft and all-round indie-game legend, is being sued by Bethesda. Mojang have upset some uppity bigwigs by trying to call their new game ‘Scrolls’, which apparantly is too similar to ‘The Elder Scrolls’ (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, etc). As a gamer with enough basic knowledge to understand they are 2 completely different games based on 2 very different genres – one is a sprawling third-person RPG, the other is a card collecting game with a fantasy theme – I can’t understand why such a fuss should be made. And yet here we are again. The world of copyright and trademarks can be pretty damn infuriating sometimes. The fact that this one involves two game developers I am very fond of is saddening.

RAGE – Uprising Trailer

More information about Rage is slowly being drip-fed from Bethesda’s hype-machine of marketing videos. For starters, it turns out the world is in such a sorry state thanks to an uninvited meteor which decided to visit Earth and you are one of the lucky survivors who escaped death by sleeping through the disaster in stasis. You are one of very few ‘arc survivors’ and that apparantly makes you very valuable to the ‘authorities’ of this otherwise lawless place. The trailer below is chock full of story introduction and fun-looking gameplay.

Canine Companions – Gaming’s Top 5 Dogs

I’ve always had a strange affinity with pooches. I just really love dogs. So, naturally, I really like it when a game features a hound or two. Some of my fondest ‘growing-up’ memories in life involved playing with my dog Molly, so its no surprise that I have a few favourite virtual mutts to go along with them. Here are my top five.

Limbo – Now on Steam

The darkly atmospheric platformer Limbo has just found a new home on the PC. If you didn’t play this when it came out on the 360 last year, now’s your chance to experience this most highly acclaimed indie hit. Featuring zero dialogue, you experience the story of a boy trapped in a very haunting world, void of colour as he traverses puzzles and obstacles, utilizing a satisfying physics engine and some of the most chilling sound design ever found in a game of this sort. Well worth £6.99 on Steam, here’s what Paul thought of it last year on XBLA. Read More ››

Anders Breivik is a Psychopath who Happens to Like Games

This weekend, Anders Behring Breivik murdered 76 people is Oslo, Norway. He has written a “manifesto”, explaining his actions, and among the 1’500 pages of whatever bullshit a psychopathic zealot might discuss are several refrences to video games. He claims to have used Modern Warfare 2 as a “training simulation” for his operation, and WoW as an excuse to his friends and family for spending so much time in isolation. This is no doubt going to dig up the age-old misguided media-fuelled argument that videogames are responsible for making people go around killing people. I expect Jack Thompson will rear his ugly face soon enough, but I want to get in here right away: the man who carried out this attack is INSANE.

Currently Waiting – Batman, Rage, Uncharted

This is the time when I’d usually write about three random games that I’m playing, and give you a brief run-down on each one, telling you what I think so far. But due to there being very little to play this summer, (all I’m doing is paying another visit to 2009’s Arkham Asylum and its proving to be a perfect warmup to the sequel which is out soon) I thought I’d tell you about some games that are nearly ready, but not quite… We’ve talked about Battlefield 3, Deus Ex 3 and Skyrim already, but here’s three other games that deserve some more attention.

The Walking Dead – Comic-Con Season 2 Trailer

We’re not all about the games here. The ‘stuff’ bit of our slogan keeps us covered when we feel like telling you about other entertaining things. Things like this. Comic-Con just happened, and along with vague news of Jurassic Park 4 from Spielberg himself (yes!), there’s also this fantastic trailer of season 2 of The Walking Dead. Frank Darabont’s adaptation was the best TV show of last year, and we’re eagerly waiting to see the story continue.

Re-remake – Goldeneye: Reloaded

The N64 classic has already been remade once in last years well-received Wii title, but now its getting the HD treatment in a remade remake. Built on a new engine to make good use of the 360 and PS3’s superior hardware, it should be the better version in the end. Admittedly, its difficult to get excited about this console-only shooter when your brain is eagerly awaiting a certain FPS threequel about battles on fields. My fond memories of 4-player splitscreen in my bedroom with 3 mates running around the Temple, License to Kill, Automatics and NO-ONES ALLOWED ODDJOB, will live on forever though.

OnLive is now, err… Live. In the UK.

OnLive is an online streaming service which lets you play PC games on almost any machine with a monitor and a controller. A huge server full of choices runs the game you want from its own brain, and streams it to your computer almost instantly, bypassing the need to use any of your own hardware. It’s basically ‘cloud’ gaming, a craze that really seems to be catching on lately. What this means is the minimum system requirements to run a game like Crysis* is now simply a fast internet connection, and not a ridiculously expensive gaming rig. The service has been running in America for a while now, and is available in the UK at long last, so I had to try it out.

Zeno Clash is Cheap! Also, Rock of Ages Trailer

Zeno Clash is on a sale over at Steam this weekend. The indie FPS melee brawler set in a tribal punk fantasy world features some of the most brutal and satisfying melee combat in any modern game. The tale it weaves is surprisingly charming too, featuring a host of weird characters and some gorgeous visual design. The developers, Team Ace, have a new game out soon too, and its about a giant rock bowling through time and smashing stuff up. Talk about a change of pace…

Bioshock Infinite – Full E3 Demo Video

How bloody good does this look? There’s about a million years to wait for the new Bioshock game, but at least we know its looking beyond awesome. The full E3 demo which all the lucky gaming press got to see at the show itself is now available publicly. By the end of it, my jaw was firmly on the ground. Check it out below.
