Game of Thrones – Minireview

Game of Thrones scratches a medieval fantasy itch I wasn’t aware I needed to scratch. I hadn’t actually heard of the show until people started talking about it a few episodes in, so in case you’re also in the dark, here’s a quick rundown: its a brutally dark medieval TV drama with hints of fantasy set in a world of warring factions, backstabbing nobles and corrupt families. It focuses more on drama and its characters instead of mindless fight scenes, but it knows when to apply the violence and isn’t shy when it comes to its very adult themes. Based on the first of the fantasy novels ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ by George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones is chock full of tense drama and fantastic writing. Throw in an obscene amount of female nudity and you have one of the most mature TV dramas of recent memory.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution gameplay

IGN have a new 12 minute preview video of Deus Ex 3 – I’ve posted it below, but I really don’t want to see too much of this game in action until I’ve got my hands on it, so I stopped watching after 3 minutes. With the first Deus Ex being one of the BEST GAMES EVER, its fair to say I’m rather hyped for this. There’s no way it could live up to the original…surely? People who’ve played it think it actually could

Pixar’s Next Movie – Brave

Thank god it isn’t Cars 3. Pixar have rarely put a foot wrong but after John Lasseter became essentially the joint leader of both Disney and Pixar, I can’t help feeling he’s lost some of his magic touch… I found Cars to be a dull disappointment, and the sequel is getting terrible reviews but I have faith that they’ll return to form in their next film, which conveniently has a new teaser trailer out. Check out the first reveal of Brave below.

Steam Summer Sale is Here!

That’s right kids, it’s time to spend all your money on cheap games at the Steam Summer Sale! Paul and I picked the wrong time to make a “No-New-Games Pact”. Steam has a habit of having the most absurd sales on the web, and this one seems to be no exception. Theres a load load of new and old games ranging from every genre you can imagine. Portal 2 for 20 quid stands out for me. Lots of good indie games going for cheap too. Happy spending! Read More ››

Victory for Freedom of Speech

For 6 years, the Californian government has been trying to pass a law which would essentially make it a criminal offense to sell adult games to minors. It would have had far-reaching implications and would have cost the games industry a massive blow to its creativity and way of thinking. Needless to say, its not the idea of keeping kids away from adult games we disagree with, merely the absurd notion that blanket-banning everything is the correct way of dealing with the issue – something most anti-gaming politicians seem to want. Luckily, common sense and justice has prevailed because the Supreme Court overturned the proposed law yesterday and we can carry on shooting zombies in peace.

Team Fortress 2 – Now FREE to Play

Team Fortress just went Free-to-Play. Forever. If you’ve never played the ultra-violent cartoon shooter before, now you have absolutely no reason not to. My Steam profile claims I’ve poured over 40 hours into this, but I know its at least double that in reality because I was there from the very first beta. I’ve seen it evolve from the beginning, with constant free updates which have added new maps, new weapons and yes, hats… it really is amazing how much Valve have added to the game over the years and now its available completely free. Also, Meet the Medic below.

Movie Review – 127 Hours

127 Hours is the ninth feature film by English director Danny Boyle and tells the shockingly true story of Aron Ralston who, while out climbing in Blue John Canyon of Utah, found himself trapped alone for over 5 days. He managed to escape, but it literally cost him an arm to survive. It’s a remarkable story, and has been crafted into a mesmerising film I’ll never forget.

Minecraft 1.6 – A Wolf’s Tale

I tamed my first wolf the other day. Since 1.6 of the Minecraft beta was released, there’s been lots of cool new features, but by far the best addition is the packs of wolves that now roam the countryside. Now I can live the dream of exploring a new world with a canine companion. Its just like that film Cast Away, only with a dog instead of a football.

Halo 4 – Finish the Fight Again

Microsoft have announced a sequel to the quaint sci-fi adventure Halo. It should be a game where you shoot aliens and drive buggies, if previous entries in the reasonably popular series are anything to go by. It may also feature some multiplayer, which is nice if you enjoy that sort of thing. You’ll also learn the fate of that Master Chief fellow, too. Tedious trailer is below.

Prey 2 looks like Blade Runner meets Star Wars

I didn’t ever finish Prey, but I can say I liked the opening level. That was very good. There’s a trailer out for the sequel, and its going in a nice new direction to that of the first game. Bounty hunting aliens on a massive space station? Yes please. This looks like the love child of Blade Runner and Star Wars, set in the outer worldly goodness of something like Mass Effect. Interesting live-action/CGI mashup trailer is below.

LotRO – Rise of Isengard Trailer

I have fond memories of Lord of the Rings Online, but I stopped playing years ago due to a generic vow of never playing an MMO again (which I’ve since broken several times anyway). Now that its free-to-play, there’s no reason not to at least check it out if only to see some of the cool locations adapted from the epic stories. The game is due a new expansion pack, which will bring Isengard and the surrounding area into the world.
