The Boy Who Stole Half-Life 2 – Eurogamer

Eurogamer have an interesting article chronicling the story of Axel Gembe, the German hacker responsible for breaking into Valve’s network and releasing the source code for the then-unfinished Half Life 2 back in 2003. This is the first time we’re able to hear the story from his point of view, and it outlines the entire event pretty well. Check it out over at Eurogamer.net. The story of Half Life 2’s development is pretty much a legend among PC gamers and its weird hearing this story so many years down the line. Who remembers that early screenshot? Ah, good memories… Read More ››

Telltale making Jurassic Park

Telltale have been busily making fun point and click adventure games for a while now, with mostly good results. I didn’t play any of the new Sam and Max games, admittedly, but I tried the Strong Bad and Monkey Island episodes, and they seemed alright. Just nothing spectacular. Then recently, they’ve been trying some new game ideas such as Late Night At the Inventory, a simple but entertaining poker game. They also made the surprise jump to a more mainstream popular franchise in Back to the Future (the second episode of which is out today, in fact). Still, none of these have piped my interest as much as the prospect of a JURASSIC PARK GAME! YEEEAH!

RAGE – New Trailer

We haven’t mentioned id’s Rage around here yet, and with a new trailer out today which shows off some of the gameplay, nows as good a time as any to fix that. I’m pretty excited about the prospect of Rage – the makers of Doom and Quake know what makes a good FPS, and since this is the first new IP of theirs in over a decade I reckon that excitement is more than justified.

The Brotherhood is coming…FINALLY!

Assassins Creed Brotherhood is finally available to pre-order for PC, with the confirmed release date of March 18th. So if like me (to be honest I think I’m the only one) you’ve been patiently waiting for the PC release, it’s time to rejoice! As an added bonus, there’s a rumour that the game will not include Ubisoft’s dreaded new DRM system which requires you to have a constant online connection to their servers… Perhaps they’ve finally seen the light. Crysis 2 story trailer

It’s been 4 years since Crysis, the PC exclusive beast which became the graphical benchmark for all modern shooters. For a while we were waiting in anticipation of what Crytek’s next game would look like, expecting another leap forward in graphical deliciousness. Crysis 2 is now only a month away from release, and though it doesn’t appear to be as great a leap forward in the visual department as we expected, (lets thank the console toys for that) it still looks fantastic. See the new 3 minute story trailer below.

Minecraft – How to build a New World

Minecraft reached Beta towards the end of 2010, and we decided it was time to start building our own new world. We rent a server from Multiplay and have been playing Survival Multiplayer mode for several months, exploring the land, mining for treasures, discovering natural caverns and of course building a whole load of fortresses, towers and dungeons. Unlike Classic mode, which gives you an unlimited amount of blocks in a limited space (see The Realm of Bal’dock), SMP mode drops you in an empty, infinite map, and leaves you to your own devices. You start out with absolutely nothing and must gather up resources before you can use them, so your creations feel considerably more valuable because they take more effort to produce. Below is a visual guide to the world we’ve made. Welcome to Diggasaurus Park…

Movie Review – Zeitgeist: Moving Forward

Zeitgeist: Moving Forward is the third documentary by activist Peter Joseph, who has independently released three of the most thought-provoking films I’ve ever seen. Their overall message has far-reaching implications: our world’s economy, which is based on money and power are increasingly becoming redundant in the modern world, and as a species it is in our own interest to think of an alternative way of life – one that encourages progress, rather than restricts it. The films offer a potential solution to the apparent dire state of global culture, and it is very hard not to feel inspired by the ideas they suggest…

Deus Ex 3 info overload

RockPaperShotgun have a whole load of new information about Deus Ex 3. I’m more excited about this game than any other this year, and if you ever played the original Deus Ex, I’m sure you’re equally as keen to get your hands on it. It sure does look as though they’re doing everything they can to produce a faithful prequel to the original, and put the misstep that was Invisible War in the past. Trailer below.

Review – Singularity

Singularity was largely ignored when it released in June last year, but after an impressive-looking trailer and finding out Raven Software (Soldier of Fortune 2, Quake 4) were behind it, I had enough reason to be intrigued. Thanks to Activision’s new policy of “ignore it if it isn’t Call of Duty”, the game whimpered onto the market and sold about 7 copies. It took me until Steam’s Christmas sale to buy it, because it wasn’t in any stores and the ones that did have it were stupidly overpriced, even online. Its a real pity because here is a game that has clearly been influenced by some of the most high-profile first-person shooters in recent years, and has managed to develop their ideas into a solid, entertaining experience, and one that deserves an audience.

Currently Playing – Singularity, GTA 4 & Cataclysm

Who needs New Years Resolutions anyway? A sensible one for me to make would have been “stop playing 12 games at the same time”, but no such vow was made and here I am yet again with multiple games on the go. I’ve been trekking through New Vegas since it was released, and still haven’t seen everything in the wasteland. I bought Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and the GTA 4 collection during the amazing Steam christmas sales – I have barely touched the former, but i did finally play through the latter – after starting Niko Bellic’s story 3 times in the past, I have at long last seen how it ends and I utterly loved it. Meanwhile, Singularity is proving to be a fun mish-mash of various modern shooter ideas rolled together to create something new. And then there’s that quaint MMO expansion that a few people are playing lately. Apparantly it has a dragon in it…

A Celebratory Century – The Tower Unveiled

100 posts and still not dead! Yes, we’ve reached a milestone, and to celebrate we decided to finish the site. Since the site began, Paul and myself wanted a page dedicated to all the games we’ve ever looked at, specifically to rank them in order of awesomeness. We came up with a name, and a concept for it, and then ignored it for about 8 months. Then last week with the 100th post looming, we decided enough was enough, and the time has come to open The Tower…
