Cyborg Day – Machine Man

I’d like to tell you about a book. Wait, don’t leave. Its about a man who wants to be a cyborg. Sounds good, right? It’s the story of a scientist who, after chopping off his own leg in a freak accident involving a huge bit of industrial machinery, decides to build himself a new one. He quickly realises the benefits of technology over biology and delves into a journey of self-discovery, voluntary amputation and a bit of love.

Launch Trailer of the Week

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is out this week. We are quite looking forward to playing it. If you’re lucky enough to be American, you should stop reading and go play it right now… just don’t tell us. We’ll get angry.

DOTA 2 – Live Tournament at Gamescom

There isn’t a single in-game trailer or screenshot available for DOTA 2, Valve’s sequel to the Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients. Yet, remarkably, they are showing the game off publically for the first time by hosting a huge tournament for it. For the next few days, you can watch the action live, right here. There’s also a CGI trailer out, which I’ve embedded below.

Battlefield 3 – Multiplayer & Jets… Yes!

Battlefield 3

Finally! This trailer of the Caspian Border multiplayer map shows – in lots of detail – the return of jets to the Battlefield series. This is one absolutely action-packed trailer, and my anticipation for this game has just quadrupled. Also, keep an eye out for what appears to be a little bomb-disposal robot who rather comically drives right into a wall…

Counter Strike: Global Offensive Announced

Valve have unveiled a new game, and it isn’t Half Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3, Team Fortress 3 or Portal 3. No, it’s Counter Strike 3. This is going to be huge.

MineCon 2011 is a Go!

MineCon 2011

It’s official; Minecraft is so popular that an entire convention all about Notch and Mojang’s cult success game has sprung up, and in Las Vegas, USA no less! Now I like Minecraft, but I certainly couldn’t afford to splash out on tickets to this quite yet. You couldn’t ask for a much cooler location to hold the event though, and if I have the money next year, I certainly wouldn’t mind attending.

Modern Warfare 3 – Spec Ops Trailer

Modern Warfare 3

There’s no doubt about it, I’m ten times more excited about Battlefield 3 than I am about Modern Warfare 3. However, my favourite part of Modern Warfare 2 was the two-player spec-ops missions where you got to fight masses and masses of enemy AI soldiers, and of course, where would the newest installment to the series be if it didn’t include a similar or even better rendition of the same feature… Well goody goody gun-drops, look what we have here! The following trailer for MW3 Spec Ops mode gives plenty of explosive and bullety footage of a TON of cool things happening during a lengthy battle between players and AI bastards who simply won’t leave you alone. Also, how clever are they, spelling WW3 with an upside down M; they’ve definitely used their smarts right there.

Notch and Mojang are being Sued

What a load of crap this is. Notch, creator of Minecraft and all-round indie-game legend, is being sued by Bethesda. Mojang have upset some uppity bigwigs by trying to call their new game ‘Scrolls’, which apparantly is too similar to ‘The Elder Scrolls’ (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, etc). As a gamer with enough basic knowledge to understand they are 2 completely different games based on 2 very different genres – one is a sprawling third-person RPG, the other is a card collecting game with a fantasy theme – I can’t understand why such a fuss should be made. Surely you can’t copyright a single word, especially one so generic as ‘scrolls’. And yet here we are – its like Tim Langdell all over again. The world of copyright and trademarks can be pretty damn infuriating sometimes. The fact that this one involves two game developers I am very fond of is saddening.

RAGE – Uprising Trailer

More information about Rage is slowly being drip-fed from Bethesda’s hype-machine of marketing videos. For starters, it turns out the world is in such a sorry state thanks to an uninvited meteor which decided to visit Earth and you are one of the lucky survivors who escaped death by sleeping through the disaster in stasis. You are one of very few ‘arc survivors’ and that apparantly makes you very valuable to the ‘authorities’ of this otherwise lawless place. The trailer below is chock full of story introduction and fun-looking gameplay.

Canine Companions – Gaming’s Top 5 Dogs

I’ve always had a strange affinity with pooches. I just really love dogs. So, naturally, I really like it when a game features a hound or two. Some of my fondest ‘growing-up’ memories in life involved playing with my dog Molly, so its no surprise that I have a few favourite virtual mutts to go along with them. Here are my top five.
