Life After Aperture – I scratch my back, I scratch mine

After Aperture

As gamers, we all like to imagine at one point or another what the characters and events in our favourite games would be like in the shape of a live-action production, whether it be the Halo movie that Peter Jackson was going to direct before it died on its arse, or the strong possibility of a Mass Effect movie, which by all means could still flop around on the floor like a dying fish out of water – because isn’t that precisely what almost all big-budget video game movies are? Fortunately, there are always individuals who are willing to make unlicensed, short indie films based on the games we know and love, entirely for fun and not for the sake of making millions. Outside Aperture is a great example, and entirely worthy of your time.

Terrariarrific – How Terraria Dug a Hole and Stole My Heart

Terraria

Terraria is, as many people might describe it, a 2D Minecraft. Some would argue that it’s nothing at all like Minecraft, despite being about digging for materials, crafting items, fighting monsters and exploring, but sure, I know what they mean.

Bioshock Infinite – Full E3 Demo Video

How bloody good does this look? There’s about a million years to wait for the new Bioshock game, but at least we know its looking beyond awesome. The full E3 demo which all the lucky gaming press got to see at the show itself is now available publicly. By the end of it, my jaw was firmly on the ground. Check it out below.

Game of Thrones – Minireview

Game of Thrones scratches a medieval fantasy itch I wasn’t aware I needed to scratch. I hadn’t actually heard of the show until people started talking about it a few episodes in, so in case you’re also in the dark, here’s a quick rundown: its a brutally dark medieval TV drama with hints of fantasy set in a world of warring factions, backstabbing nobles and corrupt families. It focuses more on drama and its characters instead of mindless fight scenes, but it knows when to apply the violence and isn’t shy when it comes to its very adult themes. Based on the first of the fantasy novels ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ by George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones is chock full of tense drama and fantastic writing. Throw in an obscene amount of female nudity and you have one of the most mature TV dramas of recent memory.

Return to Auraxis – Planetside 2 Officially Announced

Planetside 2

Oh Em Gee! It’s finally coming! Planetside… TWO!! (No longer being referred to as Planetside Next) I played the original to death back when I was about 15, and I distinctly remember my dad had to cancel my subscription because I rarely did anything else, (even play other games). It was probably the best thing for me at the time, and looking back I escaped an incredibly addictive drug of gun-totin’, fighter-jet-flyin’, tank-drivin’, base-capturin’ awesomeness.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution gameplay

IGN have a new 12 minute preview video of Deus Ex 3 – I’ve posted it below, but I really don’t want to see too much of this game in action until I’ve got my hands on it, so I stopped watching after 3 minutes. With the first Deus Ex being one of the BEST GAMES EVER, its fair to say I’m rather hyped for this. There’s no way it could live up to the original…surely? People who’ve played it think it actually could

Pixar’s Next Movie – Brave

Thank god it isn’t Cars 3. Pixar have rarely put a foot wrong but after John Lasseter became essentially the joint leader of both Disney and Pixar, I can’t help feeling he’s lost some of his magic touch… I found Cars to be a dull disappointment, and the sequel is getting terrible reviews but I have faith that they’ll return to form in their next film, which conveniently has a new teaser trailer out. Check out the first reveal of Brave below.

Steam Summer Sale is Here!

That’s right kids, it’s time to spend all your money on cheap games at the Steam Summer Sale! Paul and I picked the wrong time to make a “No-New-Games Pact”. Steam has a habit of having the most absurd sales on the web, and this one seems to be no exception. Theres a load load of new and old games ranging from every genre you can imagine. Portal 2 for 20 quid stands out for me. Lots of good indie games going for cheap too. Happy spending!

Minecraft Adventure Update will have NPCs, XP, and Leveling

Minecraft

Finally! According to Notch’s latest post about the state of Minecraft once the 1.7 update has come around – implementing new piston blocks for creating even more ridiculous and complex systems of awesomeness – there may very well be NPC towns, something that has been hinted at and half-promised well before Minecraft hit beta last year. There is also mention of “new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas”, and not to mention “more interesting farming, [and] bigger incentives to explore”. Could we start to see an inkling of item shops and friendly AI companions for creating armies of doom with? I hope so! Notch promises more details between now and then.

I. Can’t. Wait.

Victory for Freedom of Speech

For 6 years, the Californian government has been trying to pass a law which would essentially make it a criminal offense to sell adult games to minors. It would have had far-reaching implications and would have cost the games industry a massive blow to its creativity and way of thinking. Needless to say, its not the idea of keeping kids away from adult games we disagree with, merely the absurd notion that blanket-banning everything is the correct way of dealing with the issue – something most anti-gaming politicians seem to want. Luckily, common sense and justice has prevailed because the Supreme Court overturned the proposed law yesterday and we can carry on shooting zombies in peace.

We’re 1 Today!

Blimey. An entire year of gaming-related ramblings and ravings, the odd review, and those three rants… It’s been such a fun year, we’ve decided to carry on a while longer and see what happens. If you’ve ever read our words, cheers. If this is your first visit, well, sorry it had to be one of these annoying self-indulgent birthday messages. Just come back again tomorrow.

Review – Red Faction: Armageddon

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more – literally. Red Faction: Armageddon takes us back into the mines, back into the tunnels that were the familiar setting of the original Red Faction, the one that stole our hearts, blew endless chunks of rock out of our walls, and killed mutated freaky things that wanted to eat you alive. Yes, to me it feels kind of like a journey back to the start of it all, but sadly there were a few things missing.
