Wow, this is a nice surprise! Valve just announced that on Monday we’ll be getting a new game – for free! Alien Swarm was originally a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, and it was bloody fantastic. Featuring 4 player co-op, it was a top-down 3rd person shooter, in which teamwork was the only way to survive through the campaign. As the title suggests, the meat of the game was in fending off waves of nasty beasties with sharp claws, but there were also objectives to complete and a story to fight your way through. I have fond memories of being scared shitless trying to hack through a door while my friends shouted “they’re coming! oh god theres THOUSANDS!” down their mic’s. Trailer below.

It was really tense in places and had a very unsettling atmosphere. I can’t believe Valve haven’t said anything about this sooner (they hired the original mod team 2 years ago!) and I can’t believe they’re gonna give it away for free. They deserve a hug.

I recently played through Cult of the Lamb, a satirical take on the concept of running a demonic cult. It turns horrific things like sacrificial rituals, cannibalism and straight up gaslighting abuse into hilarious amusements by filtering everything through its cartoonish lens. You are a sheep, after all, and all your followers are sycophantic anthropomorphic […]

Hello, world! This post marks the moment in time and space when BangClickReload got a little redesign and was dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Every post before this point is rather old and might not look right, and unless I decide to go through them all to fix them, they’re going to […]

    Driving Rage

This morning I had immense road rage, but it was totally justified. One guy was inches away from driving out in front of me at a roundabout, and at least four others changed lanes in front of me suddenly, without indicating. This makes me angry, and in my pure rage I recalled the following scene from the brilliant action-comedy, Shoot Em Up. If only I could dispatch ignorant drivers in the same way. One can only dream!

Life After Aperture – I scratch my back, I scratch mine

    After Aperture

As gamers, we all like to imagine at one point or another what the characters and events in our favourite games would be like in the shape of a live-action production, whether it be the Halo movie that Peter Jackson was going to direct before it died on its arse, or the strong possibility of a Mass Effect movie, which by all means could still flop around on the floor like a dying fish out of water. But, isn’t that precisely what almost all big-budget video game movies are? Fortunately, there are always individuals who are willing to make unlicensed, short indie films based on the games we know and love, entirely for fun and not for the sake of making millions. Outside Aperture is a great example, and entirely worthy of your time.

    Super Meat Boy

Every now and then a game comes along that you play for only a few minutes, and you sit there, mouth open, eyes wide, and you’ve already made your judgment. Usually it’s ‘This game SUCKS!’ (see Naughty Bear review). Super Meat Boy, however, is an outstanding exception to this rule. Within 30 seconds, we decided that this game is simply fantastic. No, really, it’s brilliant!
