Scribblenauts was the only DS game I bought last year. I never use my DS these days, it’s only useful purpose is for train journeys home from London, or for some multiplayer Bomberman shenanigans at the airport with mates. I can’t recommend Scribblenauts enough though – essentially its a database of words, which then come to life. You can think of almost ANYTHING and write it down in the game and watch it come to life. Its truly bewildering the amount of stuff they crammed into this tiny game disc. Scribblenauts 2 was unveiled at E3 this year, and it looks like it’s gonna be even bigger…
The amusingly dull-sounding key feature this time is adjectives. The first game was all about the nouns – objects like chairs, swords, and bombs, as well as loads of animals like tigers, dinosaurs, and Jesus (writing ‘Jesus’ and ‘T-rex’ resulted in one truly epic battle). This time though you can add descriptive words to the beginning of those nouns. This opens up about a trillion new opportunities for crazy amounts of imagination. Perhaps you’d like a ‘Fat Badger’? Or an ‘Ugly Rocket Launcher’? The trailer below gives the hilarious example of a ‘Gentlemanly Red Raptor’, which spawns a rideable top-hat-wearing monster – the possibilities are totally mind blowing. It’s scheduled for an autumn release this year.

The Trials franchise is surely the most successful game to ever start out life as a Flash browser game. I remember playing the original game on Miniclip back in the day, and I have played every single iteration since. The game’s core concept is simple – you control a trials bike, and must navigate it across a series of increasingly difficult obstacle courses on a 2D pane. It’s the perfect pick-up-and-play game, because it’s easy to get the basics, but insanely difficult to master.
I’m currently enjoying getting down and dirty with nature. Taming dinosaurs in Ark: Survival evolved is exciting and frustrating in equal measure. Exciting because I’m taming friggin dinosaurs. Frustrating because bigger dinosaurs keep eating them… And when I’m not playing that, I’m exploring the freezing mountains in Rise of the Tomb Raider – seriously, I have never felt so cold playing a videogame. It’s the way Lara hugs herself in the chill wind as the snow clings to her jacket. It’s one of the most beautiful games I’ve seen in a long time.
Crysis 2 is out in America already, and we’re getting ours on Friday here in the UK. It looks stunning, and many reviews are claiming it to be the best-looking console game ever. I’m quite gutted that its had to be dumbed down for them frankly, but theres no denying the game still looks fantastic. Paul and I have been preparing ourselves for it by revisiting the original Crysis, and the semi-sequel Warhead all this week, which I finally got around to finishing.
