Flight Of The Pig – Minecraft Airship Mod

Minecraft Airship Mod

Whilst skimming through Notch’s twitter updates, I found a link to a Minecraft mod video. This is by far one of the coolest Minecraft mods I’ve seen yet, called ‘Zeppelin’ and created by blakmajik, and seems to let you turn any creation you want into a flyable machine of wonderment and joy, under an incredibly fair limit of 1024 blocks.

Buy One Minecraft, Get One Minecraft Free!

Minecraft

Notch got married this weekend, and to celebrate his sealing the deal and effectively splitting half of his fortune with another human being, he has decided that anyone who buys Minecraft this weekend should be allowed a second copy absolutely free. What a guy!

Minecraft Adventure Update will have NPCs, XP, and Leveling

Minecraft

Finally! According to Notch’s latest post about the state of Minecraft once the 1.7 update has come around – implementing new piston blocks for creating even more ridiculous and complex systems of awesomeness – there may very well be NPC towns, something that has been hinted at and half-promised well before Minecraft hit beta last year. There is also mention of ‘new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas’, and not to mention ‘more interesting farming, [and] bigger incentives to explore’. Could we start to see an inkling of item shops and friendly AI companions for creating armies of doom with? I hope so! Notch promises more details between now and then.

I. Can’t. Wait.

Minecraft 1.6 – A Wolf’s Tale

I tamed my first wolf the other day. Since 1.6 of the Minecraft beta was released, there’s been lots of cool new features, but by far the best addition is the packs of wolves that now roam the countryside. Now I can live the dream of exploring a new world with a canine companion. Its just like that film Cast Away, only with a dog instead of a football.

Minecraft – Pet Wolves!

The latest Minecraft update is on its way, and will feature pets! Pet wolves, to be precise. They are both cute and fearsome, as this new video suggests. Look at the way they shake themselves after having a swim! I know nothing more about this, but I can’t wait. Click below to see the video.

Minecraft – How to (accidentally) Destroy a World

Minecraft

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking ‘Why does that little Minecraft man look so sad?‘. That little Minecraft man is Matt’s, and I have to take this moment to congratulate Matt on his achievement earlier this week, the achievement of managing to accidentally wipe an entire (new) world of things that a bunch of people worked pretty hard on. How the hell did he do that, you ask? Well, in the attempt to update our server so we could enjoy the wonders of the latest updates from version 1.3 (including a new lighting engine and BEDS), he inadvertently reset the server, losing the entire world and setting us back in a brand new world to start again. Now, thankfully, all I had built was a pretty shit skyscraper, and all the spawns were completely buggered (10 creepers per day attacking my structures), but there was also a lot of other hard work done by other members of the server. So yes, Matt, you should feel terrible.

Minecraft – How to build a New World

Minecraft reached Beta towards the end of 2010, and we decided it was time to start building our own new world. We rent a server from Multiplay and have been playing Survival Multiplayer mode for several months, exploring the land, mining for treasures, discovering natural caverns and of course building a whole load of fortresses, towers and dungeons. Unlike Classic mode, which gives you an unlimited amount of blocks in a limited space (see The Realm of Bal’dock), SMP mode drops you in an empty, infinite map, and leaves you to your own devices. You start out with absolutely nothing and must gather up resources before you can use them, so your creations feel considerably more valuable because they take more effort to produce. Below is a visual guide to the world we’ve made. Welcome to Diggasaurus Park…

Top Ten of 2010 – 4. Minecraft

Top Ten of 2010 - 4. Minecraft

As we continue through the top 5 of our countdown, we come to the game that we posted more about than any other game in the past year. Unquestionably the biggest indie hit of 2010, and it spent the majority of that year in alpha. This is Minecraft…

Minecraft – Growing and growing and growing…

We’ve had a surge of hits in the past few days, and it’s 99% because of Minecraft. I’ve covered the game before, and took you on a tour of a world we created in the ‘classic’ version of the game, but a LOT has happened in the land of cubes lately, so I thought it was a good to have a little catch up…

Minecraft – How to Build a World

This is Minecraft. Paul and I, along with a few other mates have been playing this deceivingly simple-looking indie game for a few months now. It’s been made in Java, and is currently in pre-alpha, yet has gathered so much interest the maker has all but turned his full attention to the game, even quitting his day job so he can focus on adding more features to his game, which has the potential to be massive upon its release. In its current state, the best feature is the multiplayer creative mode. It’s all about building stuff out of square shaped bricks – think virtual Lego, only everything is made of differently textured cubes. We have been slowly building up our own little world, and I thought it could be fun to take you on a tour of our weird creations. Welcome to the Realm of Bal’dock. Be warned, this post contains a ton of pictures. Read More ››

Gaming Memories – VVVVVV

Format: PC
Release date: 2010

VVVVVV is one of the only 2D platform games that I have completed from start to finish, which makes it special to me. I became obsessed with Veni Vidi Vici, an entirely optional sequence of deadly traps that teases you with a collectible orb right in the very first room, which is blocked off by a tiny box. You can’t jump in the traditional way as most other platformer’s, so the only way to overcome the box is by leaping up through the ridiculously cruel chambers above, navigating your way to the top…and then back down again.

Here’s a video of someone completing Veni Vidi Vici. Watch them fail a few times at first, but finally succeed about 1 minute in. You have no idea how good it feels to complete this bastard:

I think it took me over a week to beat it. And because the game worked on Mac, I sneakily played it at my old workplace, when I thought no-one was looking. After hours of repeating the same rooms over and over and over again until my fingers had memorised the precise movements down to a tee, I FINALLY beat that horrendous level and got my orb. I did one of those restrained cheers for joy, desperately trying to hold back an outburst so nobody in the office heard me and realised I wasn’t actually working. Pretty sure Paul knew exactly what had happened though. He was sitting next to me at the time, probably playing Minecraft.

I listen to the soundtrack to VVVVVV quite regularly because it is a fantastic example of chiptune music, mimicking that retro sound but with a contemporary flair. Every tune is just so bloody catchy, and it’s one of only a select few game OST’s that has made it into my mp3 collection of ‘normal’ music. It goes well with the Bastion soundtrack, and both albums helped me to train for my first (and so far, only) half marathon. ‘Pushing Onwards,’ the song from the video above, is a real motivator for going just a little bit further… I have since completed a few other 2D platformers, but I haven’t enjoyed any quite so much as Terry Cavanagh’s VVVVVV.
