Review – Mafia II

Mafia II

Ever wanted to play a part in another story about the Mafia in the 1940-50s, watching plenty of well animated cutscenes and shooting lots of people? Well if so, you’re in luck, because that’s exactly what you get with Mafia II. It was announced by 2K Games around August, 2007, but now – 3 years later – it was finally released for all the mobster fans out there to get their hands on and gawp at. It certainly looked set to bowl us all over with a realistic, beautiful, story driven, free-roaming gangster blast from the past. Has it attempted and pulled off everything we may have expected from it? Or did it flop beyond all reason and leave those of us waiting years for it utterly disappointed?

Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Demo

Holy mother of shitting crikey that was horrible. Paul and I just played through the demo of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and it has to be the scariest demo I’ve ever played, and quite honestly I don’t know HOW I managed to finish it. It’s by the maker’s of Penumbra, but its undoubtedly better… Major demo spoilers below, but go play it for yourself right now.

Tales of Valor, and of repeated defeat…

Company of Heroes isn’t exactly a new game, but it keeps popping up in Steam sales and with the release of the beta version of CoH Online, we decided to revisit it. There’s been a few add-ons and expansions since the original game, and the newest, Tales of Valor, contains a tense co-op mission called Operation Stonewall, or as we dubbed it “defend the bastard buildings or whatever” and for the last two nights, that’s exactly what we’ve have been playing…

Currently Playing… Mafia II, K&L 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2

Mafia II / Kane & Lynch 2 / Super Mario Galaxy 2

My games-funding dry spell was finally over the other day, and circumstances involving getting a bunch of random games for Wii and DS from a relative (for free!) meant I had a load of trade-in value just waiting to be spent. This meant I was able to go nuts and buy a bunch of games that I’d have no time to play. I certainly didn’t see that as an issue, though, and in the last week and a half, I’ve had three big games to play all at once.

R.I.P. Satoshi Kon – Anime loses a godfather

Last week brought about an unpleasant feeling of disappointment and sad disbelief. I was not in grief when I heard the news, because its not like I knew the man personally, nor in fact even knew what he looked like until it was announced, but when I heard the news of Satoshi Kon’s death, aged 46, I couldn’t help feeling we’ve lost a brilliant creative mind before their time was up. He was one of the most promising anime directors currently active, responsible for introducing me to the wonderful world of Japanese animation, and was yet to make a film anything less than mesmerising. I deeply admired his work and am genuinely gutted at the thought of never seeing what else may have come out of that extraordinary imagination.

Movie Review – Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

When I first watched the trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, I had little or no idea what was going on. At first it appeared to be just another Michael Cera (Superbad, Juno) comedy where he plays an awkward teen with a very typical love interest, quite a trend in his movies, but then suddenly there was an explosion of crazy stuff I simply wasn’t expecting; video game sound and visual effects, street fighter style fight scenes, and a whole bunch of vintage gaming homages. This was suddenly a film that I really wanted to see!

Lair of the Shadowbroker – Mass Effect 2 DLC

The newest bit of DLC for Mass Effect 2 is out soon, subtitled Lair of the Shadowbroker, it looks as though we’re finally gonna discover who or what that slightly more elusive man is. Or woman. Or alien. If my damn PC save files hadn’t corrupted, my Shepherd could even continue her relationship with Liara! Alas, until I get round to replaying through the entire game again, there’ll be no more disturbing cross-spieces lesbianism’s going on…which is a shame. Check out the trailer below.

Review – Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light

Lara Croft’s newest adventure is unlike anything you’ve seen her in before, and I’m happy to say it’s one of her most fun to play. Up until this point, all of the Tomb Raider games have been traditional 3D platformers, but The Guardian of Light brings the aging series into new and welcoming territory – it’s an isometric, top-down puzzle platformer designed to be played alone or with a friend – right now co-op only works if you’re sitting in the same room, but even without online features we all take for granted these days, I can’t recommend it enough.
