The Road to Kinect.

Guest Article : Ivan Corbett

Way back in 2007 the Wii surpassed everyone’s expectations shooting right to number one in console sales, its innovative use of motion controls and a family orientated approach rapidly gained popularity amongst a new wave of casual gamers. Suddenly everyone could play, no longer was the video game console solely the domain of the kids. This new and massive market worried the competition at Microsoft and Sony greatly, something had to be done.

A Perfect Society Built on Achievement Points…

Imagine if real life had an achievement system. Imagine if you could earn ‘points’ for helping around your neighbourhood, which you could then spend on various rewards, such as movie tickets, or a free flight, or a brand new tv. Different acts would have to be valued and assigned a certain reward. Litter picking could grant a small amount of points whereas volunteering at a homeless shelter would surely deserve a bigger prize. The most startling thing about this is that I may not have to imagine this for much longer. Apparantly, my local council is trying to finalise plans to introduce this system sometime in the near future.

Football Manager – My addiction

Football Manager 2011

Guest Article : Richard Chapman

Picture the scene. It’s a wet and windy Tuesday night in High Wycombe as Wycombe Wanderers play host to Torquay United in a mid-table League 2 clash. As the clock ticks into the final minute of injury time the hosts concede a needless corner. The ball is crossed in high through the driving Buckinghamshire rain as a Torquay striker peels away from his marker to power in a heart-breaking late equalizer. The home manager slumps back into his seat, his head falls into his hands as a stream of expletives rush from his mouth.

In reality I can imagine this scene is quite different from the one you have just pictured. The home manager in question is not sat on the home-sides bench; he’s sat in my living room, still with his head in his hands, and still turning the air blue at his players’ late capitulation. I am that home-team manager, and I am addicted to Football Manager.

Currently playing… DR2, Sonic 4 & Enslaved

Again, I find myself with too many games and too little time. Right now I’m in the middle of slaying thousands of zombies using a ridiculous arsenal of home-made weaponry, feeling nostalgic and old for the first time ever because of a classic 2D platformer, and am climbing and fighting my way across an overgrown jungley wasteland inhabited by killer robots. Below are some thoughts of Dead Rising 2, Sonic 4 Episode 1, and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, so far…

Minecraft – Growing and growing and growing…

We’ve had a surge of hits in the past few days, and it’s 99% because of Minecraft. I’ve covered the game before, and took you on a tour of a world we created in the ‘classic’ version of the game, but a LOT has happened in the land of cubes lately, so I thought it was a good to have a little catch up…

Playstation Move? I’ll stay, thanks.

So, on the way back to work from lunch, we noticed Game had a demo of Playstation Move in-store for people to try out. Naturally, we went in and had a go.

Tales of Valor, and of repeated defeat…

Company of Heroes isn’t exactly a new game, but it keeps popping up in Steam sales and with the release of the beta version of CoH Online, we decided to revisit it. There’s been a few add-ons and expansions since the original game, and the newest, Tales of Valor, contains a tense co-op mission called Operation Stonewall, or as we dubbed it “defend the bastard buildings or whatever” and for the last two nights, that’s exactly what Paul and I have been playing…

Currently Playing… Mafia II, K&L 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2

Mafia II / Kane & Lynch 2 / Super Mario Galaxy 2

My games-funding dry spell was finally over the other day, and circumstances involving getting a bunch of random games for Wii and DS from a relative (for free!) meant I had a load of trade-in value just waiting to be spent. This meant I was able to go nuts and buy a bunch of games that I’d have no time to play. I certainly didn’t see that as an issue, though, and in the last week and a half, I’ve had three big games to play all at once.

R.I.P. Satoshi Kon – Anime loses a godfather

Last week brought about an unpleasant feeling of disappointment and sad disbelief. I was not in grief when I heard the news, because its not like I knew the man personally, nor in fact even knew what he looked like until it was announced, but when I heard the news of Satoshi Kon’s death, aged 47, I couldn’t help feeling we’ve lost a brilliant creative mind before their time was up. He was one of the most promising anime directors currently active, responsible for introducing me to the wonderful world of Japanese animation, and was yet to make a film anything less than mesmerising. I deeply admired his work and am genuinely gutted at the thought of never seeing what else may have come out of that extraordinary imagination.

A Short Guide to Gaming for Free

With the recent release of Alien Swarm, I’ve had a bit of a craving for more free gaming. You’d be surprised how much fun you can have out there without spending a penny. You simply don’t get this in other industries, and not at this calibre – let’s face it, most free stuff out there in the real world is free for a reason: it’s unwanted, out-of-date, or just crap. As for free entertainment, imagine if your local cinema had free showings of some films? I can’t, frankly. Plus, if it’s anything like my local, going to the cinema is becoming an increasingly more expensive way to spend an evening. Why not save your cash and try some of these brilliant (and surprisingly sophisticated) free games.

Indie games are in.

Right now, if you are an independent game developer, you’ve never had quite so many opportunities for showing off your skills, though you’ll likely be up against some rock solid competition – some of the best games of the last few years haven’t come from the giant mega-corporations, but rather from much smaller companies (and in some cases individual ‘bedroom coders’). Xbox Live Arcade, Steam, Flash gaming portals – there’s so much exposure out there right now, and it has resulted in a surge of innovative new gaming titles. Indie games are definitely in.
