Review – The Last Guardian

The Last Guardian

It’s safe to say that Fumito Ueda’s third game was one of my most anticipated titles of the previous generation. Announced in 2009, I eagerly watched every gameplay trailer and read up every snippet of information I could. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus remain two of my most beloved games, and I found the idea of another game by the same studio a mouth-watering temptation. A multitude of delays and long periods of silence from both Sony and the developers led many to believe it would never see the light of day, not to mention the troubling news that Ueda himself had left the project due to creative differences with Sony. Team Ico news – HD remakes, and The Last Guardian trailer

Tokyo Game Show has kicked off, and the only game I was interested in has already been shown off. It seems to show a bit of gameplay, but is mostly in-engine footage of the big creature and the kid interacting. Having been getting rather excited at the thoughts of the game coming out soon, I now have to calm myself down as the supposed release date will be “Holiday 2011”, according to IGN. I don’t know what this means, exactly, but it’s obviously not going to be out anytime soon! In the meantime, I’ll have the HD remakes of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus to keep me busy, and that’s a fine compromise to me. Click below for trailers.

The likes of Bioshock, Portal, and Dead Space are all superb examples of new franchises, but as is often the case in gaming we’ve had some truly amazing sequels. Grand Theft Auto 4 found universal critical praise (and mammoth sales figures) upon release, Assassins Creed 2 proved that listening to criticism will help you produce a vastly improved experience for your fans, and after years of delays and speculation Team Fortress 2 has shown just how far you can push the concept of multiplayer to its full potential.

This generation isn’t quite over yet, and these are a few of the games I’m eagerly awaiting, but haven’t heard much from recently…
